The leadership journey is often imagined as a steady upward climb to the top that is clear, linear, and predictable. But in truth, it feels much more like a labyrinth filled with winding paths, unexpected turns, and moments where upward progress seems to be blocked. A leadership journey is not just about moving up; it’s about transformation. Leadership is less about exerting control and more about expanding your capacity to listen, to serve, to elevate others, and to grow.
Over the years, I’ve led in medicine, education, crisis, and innovation. I’ve sat at head tables and stood alone in hard decisions. And through it all, I’ve learned that real leadership isn’t about the title you hold, it’s about the weight you carry through the journey and, most importantly, the people you serve.
Here are four lessons I’ve learned in aspiring to become a great leader.
Leaders Care and Cultivate
Great leaders care about people. They pay attention. They notice, nurture, and protect the well-being of the people they lead. They create safe spaces for people to belong and flourish. They cultivate people, rather than just driving performance for outcomes.
Leaders Create Culture
Great leaders strive to create a culture of inclusive excellence where everyone is vested in the mission and vision. It is often said that culture eats strategy for breakfast. It is shaped daily by what a leader models, tolerates, and celebrates. A culture does not get built by accident. Culture is built by intention, purpose-driven efforts, and showing what the core values are.
Leaders Choose Courage Over Comfort
Great leaders embrace bold innovations to drive progress. It’s easy and tempting to play it safe and keep things status quo. However, remaining comfortably complacent kills innovation and progress. Effective leaders show courage as they embrace new ideas, speak hard truths, and take strategic risks. They know that what’s easy is rarely what’s transformative. Gains require discomfort, and leadership demands growth.
Leaders Shoulder the Weight and Share the Credit
Great leaders take ownership when things go wrong and acknowledge others when things go right. When things go south, they don’t look for scapegoats, they look in the mirror. When there are successes, they don’t seek the spotlight, they shine it on those who helped achieve the win. The leader will shine through their reflections.
The leadership journey is not easy. It will test your resolve, challenge your convictions, and stretch your capacity in ways you never imagined. However, it is profoundly meaningful and transformative. It refines you. It deepens your empathy. It sharpens your vision. And if you stay the course with your character as your compass, humility as your strength, and courage as your fuel, you will not just lead groups or organizations. You will change lives.
Let us raise up a generation of leaders who care deeply, cultivate excellence in others, create culture with intention, and choose courage every single day. Leaders who build other leaders and leave a positive impact. Our goal should be to leave behind a legacy of leaders.
